The Chair presents its research at the 9th International Chemistry Congress of ANQUE

The UNESCO Chair ESCI-UPF, along with more than 40 companies, public bodies, research centres and universities, is participating in this four-day congress in Murcia.

Organised by ANQUE, the event serves as a meeting point for researchers and entrepreneurs facing new challenges in the field of “Foods and Beverages.”

The Chair’s Research Lines in Agrifood and Waste Management are joining the event to present their work.

The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF participates in the 9th International Chemistry Congress of ANQUE “Foods and Beverages” through its Research Lines in Agrifood and Waste Management, in Murcia (Spain). Held from 17 to 20 June, this international congress offers researchers and entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to debate and exchange information on the latest scientific and technological advances in the field of Food and Beverages. Organised by the Spanish National Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers (ANQUE, in its Spanish acronym), this event brings together around 40 international companies, public bodies, research centers, and universities involved in cutting-edge research, including the Chair.

Reusable plastic boxes generate less environmental impact than single-use cardboard boxes in the distribution of fruit and vegetables in Spain

Researchers at the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF has published the first comparative study of the main options for distribution of fruit and vegetables in Spain through life cycle assessment.

Using reusable plastic boxes would entail saving 785 million kilos of CO2 emissions per year over along their whole life cycle, a 0.24% of Spain’s total direct emissions.

Reusable plastic boxes generate 25% less environmental impact than single-use cardboard boxes in the distribution of fruit and vegetables in Spain, according to a study led by Pere Fullana i Palmer, director of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, and presented today in Madrid. The study is the first to compare the main distribution options of fruit and vegetables in the Spanish (peninsular) internal market, analysing six environmental impact categories through life cycle assessment. In five of the six impact categories analysed, reusable plastic boxes show a better environmental performance than cardboard ones, and in the sixth, the results are practically equivalent. The results of this study conclude that using reusable plastic boxes would entail saving 785 million kilos of CO2 emissions per year, over along their whole life cycle, a 0.24% of total direct emissions of Spain.

Dozens of visitors discover how are food and the environment related at the Science Festival

Researchers at the Chair joined the Barcelona Science Festival 2018 on 10th June at the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona.

Many research institutes, universities and companies participated in this event, organising more than 230 activities.

The Festival gathered together around 20,000 visitors of all ages to exchange knowledge with scientists.

A question: “How are food and the environment related?.” A call to action: “imagine that you are flying on an airplane and have to make decisions on the catering menu, considering the carbon footprint associated with the food products before selecting an option.” And two scientists form the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF: Laura Batlle-Bayer, PhD Candidate responsible for the Agrifood Research Line, and Gonzalo Blanca-Alcubilla, PhD Candidate of the Waste Management Research Line. These are the key elements of the workshop “What's the environmental footprint of food?,” held last Sunday during the Barcelona Science Festival 2018.

World Environment Day 2018: The path to plastic pollution awareness

Chosen by this year’s host, India, the theme of World Environment Day 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” and it is a call to action for all citizens to consider how to make changes in our everyday lives to reduce plastic pollution.

The Chair joins World Environment Day celebrations by influencing change in improving waste management, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting research into alternatives.

Today, the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF joins World Environment Day (WED) celebrations, a United Nations’ yearly event held on June 5th since 1974, in order to encourage global awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The theme for WED 2018, hosted this year by India, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the plastic pollution. Every year, “up to 13 million tons of plastic leak into our oceans, where it smothers coral reefs and threatens vulnerable marine wildlife. The plastic that ends up in the oceans can circle the Earth four times in a single year, and it can persist for up to 1,000 years before it fully disintegrates,” according to organisers. In this regard, the Research Lines in Waste Management and in New Materials at the Chair engage with this call to action, “Beating Plastic Pollution,” by influencing change in improving waste management, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting research into alternatives.

Weekend Science workshop: the impact of the food we eat on the environment

Researchers at the Chair will join the Barcelona Science Festival 2018 on 10th June to hold a workshop on food's carbon footprint for the general public.

On June 9-10, the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona will be turned into a science exhibit hosting more than 230 outreach activities.

In its 12th year, the Science Festival will involve several research groups from around Catalonia, among them the Chair.

The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF is ready to participate in the 12th edition of the Barcelona Science Festival by holding a workshop on the environmental impacts of food consumption on 10th June, at 16.50 and 17.20 p.m, within the space 11-12 “Living more, living better”. The Festival will take place during the whole weekend in the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona (entrance via Passeig Pujades - Passeig Lluís Companys) and will involve the record level of more than 230 free activities for all ages, run by more than 100 organisations, research centres, universities, and outreach services companies from around Catalonia, including the Chair. It is a recognised event in the city, which annually brings together more than 10,000 citizens interested in science.
