The UNESCO Chair in Cycle of Life and Climate Change has participated, in collaboration with UN Environment, in the elaboration of the new guidance document for Key Environmental Indicators for the Tourism Private Sector. Once the document is completed, the public consultation period begins, in which all stakeholders involved in tourism are invited to share their opinion. The deadline for participating is July 31st.

 The tourism sector is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world and, therefore, a key driver of socio-economic progress, particularly in developing and emerging economies. This rapidly expanding growth implies, however, many impacts and concerns, particularly in relation to resource consumption, such as energy, water, soil and materials (e.g. fossil fuels, minerals, metals, biomass). Increased consumption also increases the generation of solid waste, sewage and greenhouse gas emissions.

For these reasons it is increasingly necessary to carry out an analysis of the sector from an environmental point of view and to agree on Environmental Indicators that serve, on the one hand, to inform and raise awareness of the impacts of tourism on the environment, but that also represent an opportunity of improvement for all actors related to the sector, such as better energy efficiency, new technologies or change of habits.

The guidance document on Key Environmental Indicators for Private Tourism Sector is the outcome of collaboration between major life cycle approach and sustainable tourism experts from academia, international organizations and industry associations. The document identifies major environmental indicators that would help the tourism private sector to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Agreement using Life Cycle perspective.

Participate in the public consultation!

After the elaboration of the guidance document, the public consultation period begins to hear the opinion of all stakeholders related to tourism. It is directed to tourism professionals, public or private organizations, researchers but also citizens who are aware of the environmental impact generated by their tourism activity.

The main objectives of the consultation are:

  • Communicate recommendations on Key Environmental Indicators to tourism value chain professionals;
  • Collect feedback and suggestions from tourism industry in order to improve suggested indicators and implementation guidelines.

In order to participate in the public consultation please download the Consultation document on Key Environmental Indicators for the Tourism Private Sector (by clicking in the image below-left) and after reading it, please provide your comments by responding to the online questionnaire (below-right):
