Summary

DEPUIS Project of Environmental-friendly Products Using Information Standards is supported by the European Commission 6th Marco Programme under the Europe INNOVA initiative for two years (2006-2008). The objective of DEPUIS is to enable more companies, particularly SMEs, to improve the environmental friendly design of new products and services through the innovative use of new information standards. DEUIPS aimed at boosting to use Life Cycle Thinking on the environmental impact of their design of new products, in conformance with the Communication on Integrated Product Policy of the European Commission by developing an online Handbook (runner up Awards INNOVA Europe to the best tool of innovation 2008). It also aimed at creating understanding of the importance of standard specifications to achieve comparability, communication and archiving of technical data to support life-cycle thinking at the design stage.

Training sessions on line and workshops to achieve interaction between users and developers of the standards to speed up the acceptance and dissemination of the new methods were organized. The outcome from the workshops was used to prepare policy recommendations to ISO and CEN in the areas of standardisation and innovation for reducing environmental impact.

Objectives

  • Icrease the awareness of the benefits for life cycle thinking (LCT) in the design of new products and processes;
  • Create understanding of the importance of standard specifications to achieve comparability, communication and archiving of technical data to support life-cycle thinking at the design stage;
  • Achieve this awareness and understanding by innovative learning processes and to prepare attendees to participate in specialised workshops;
  • Focus the learning process on advisors and consultants to SMEs, the designers and product developers of larger industries and to software developers;
  • Provide feedback to the standards developers of the perceived benefits of this new technology;
  • Provide basic knowledge to the software developers in order to produce better software compatible with the international standards.
