Marta Santamaría

Qualifications

Marta Santamaría is currently doing her Ph.D. She holds an MSc (2020) in Sustainability Science and Technology from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona Tech – UPC). She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design Engineering in 2017 from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).

Professional and research activity

Marta Santamaría joined the the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF in October 2023 as a Researcher. Since then, she is working on her Ph.D. thesis in the field of decarbonization within the healthcare sector, under the supervision of Dr. Pere Fullana i Palmer. Her thesis aims to co-create strategies for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the Catalan Health System based on a Life Cycle Perspective. This approach is part of the European Horizon CATALYSE project, which aims to provide new knowledge, data, and tools to bridge the gap between knowledge and action, accelerating climate change action and protecting public health in Europe.

After completing her Master's degree, she began her career as a Research Assistant for two years on European projects related to circular economy and adaptation to climate change at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona Tech – UPC). Following this, she worked for Deloitte Spain as a sustainability consultant on decarbonization and circular economy projects for large companies, mainly in the textile and food industries. Additionally, she worked at Anteverti as a curator for Smart City Expo Abroad events.

In 2020, Marta was awarded for the Best Master's Thesis in Circular Economy by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona Tech – UPC) and the Area Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB). The thesis aimed to develop a framework for events based on circular economy principles ("Circular Conference Toolkit"). In 2019, she won first prize in "Actua 2019," awarded by CosmoCaixa and Laboratorio de Ecoinnovación. In 2018, she obtained second prize in the Circular Economy Ideas Generation Program by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) with the project "Cerclab".
