Expanded strategic partnerships and design of commercial tools
The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF has forged ties and signed collaboration agreements with research institutes, nonprofit organisations, state-owned enterprises and public bodies, and private-sector companies and organisations, both within Spain and further afield. To date, the Chair has signed a large number of agreements with other institutions, including the following:
Universidad de Málaga (Andalucía, Spain)
- Universidad de Cantabria (Cantabria, Spain)
- CIRCE - Centro de Información y Red de Creación de Empresas (Zaragoza, Spain). A research centre that creates and develops innovative solutions and scientific and technological knowledge and expertise to transfer to businesses working in the energy industry
- Universidad de San Jorge (Zaragoza, Spain). A partnership to jointly develop a PhD programme in environmental sciences
- IETcc - Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja (Madrid, Spain). A research centre that forms part of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and offers scientific and technical support in the field of construction and building materials
- EEI - Escola d’Enginyeria d’Igualada (Catalonia, Spain). A school of engineering that forms part of the Consorci Escola Tècnica d’Igualada (CETI) and is attached to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)
- ITeC - Institut de Tecnologia de la Construcció de Catalunya (Catalonia, Spain). A benchmark institution in the field of construction and delivering information technology to offer support tools for professionals for improved effectiveness, competitiveness and positioning
- Escola Politècnica de la Universitat de Girona (Catalonia, Spain). The partnership aims to carry out joint research projects to introduce a life cycle perspective into technological developments at the University of Girona
- Universidad de Medellín (Colombia). The partnership aims to carry out joint research projects to introduce a life cycle perspective in technological developments at the University of Medellín and improve PhD student exchange
- Università di Padova (Italy). The partnership aims to reach an agreement for an annual student exchange
- EMSE - École des Mines de Saint-Étienne (France)
- DUT - Dalian University of Technology (China)
- LNEG - Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (Portugal)
- Cyclus Vitae Solutions, S.L. The Chair’s spin-off works on projects that combine its business innovation expertise with the Chair’s experience in research and development

Ecoembes - Ecoembalajes Spain, S.A. (Spain). A nonprofit organisation that designs and runs specially created systems for collecting and selectively recovering waste packaging for treatment and improvement. It supports PhD candidates at the Chair through the Chair’s Industrial Doctorate Programme

Igualada UNESCO Association (Catalonia, Spain). A UNESCO Audiovisual E-Platform partner: the partnerships aims to share the platform’s audiovisual content to raise environmental awareness, especially in the area of climate change
- International Life Cycle Academy (ILCA). A worldwide collaborative effort to provide high-quality training opportunities in life cycle sustainability assessment. ILCA works closely with the Chair to offer joint training courses with the international community to promote a life cycle perspective for researchers and professionals worldwide
ARECO – Asociación de Operadores Logísticos de Elementos Reutilizables Ecosostenibles. This partnership aims to promote research into, and application of, the best environmental management practice in its activities
GRANIC - GCR Group. It supports PhD candidates at the Chair through the Chair’s Industrial Doctorate Programme
- Ball Corporation. It supports PhD candidates at the Chair through the Chair’s Industrial Doctorate Programme
- Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalonia, Spain). Recognised as a consolidated research group by the Catalan Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) in 2018
- CADS - Consell Assessor per al Desenvolupament Sostenible (Catalonia, Spain). A member of the Climate Change Expert Group
- ACR - Agència Catalana de Residus (Catalonia, Spain). Projects carried out for the ACR
- Ajuntament de Lloret de Mar (Catalonia, Spain). Partnership to carry out competitive projects
- Fira Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). Partnership for the Smart World City Expo and Barcelona Building Construmat
- Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC). Centre for international cooperation with Mediterranean countries on development and innovation in the production sector and civil society, based on more sustainable consumption and production models. The partnership has included designing an LCA training workshop in Lebanon for applying LCA to the food industry in collaboration with the UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative
- UN Environment (UNEP). The partnership between the Chair and UNEP aims to create the first document giving guidance on key environmental indicators for the private tourism industry. We signed a small-scale funding agreement with the Sustainable Lifestyles, Cities and Industry Branch of the Industry and Value Chain Unit at UNEP to organise a workshop to identify the key environmental indicators for sustainable tourism in the private sector
- UN-Habitat UNI. The Chair is a member of UNI, UN-Habitat’s main mechanism for forming alliances with academics and researchers worldwide. We worked together to produce a new Environmental Indicator Guide for tourism in the private sector
- Life Cycle Initiative (UNEP-SETAC). The Chair has worked closely with the Life Cycle Initiative from the start. We signed two small-scale funding agreements and a project cooperation agreement
- Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). Members of the Climate Change Expert Group
- Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). An independent worldwide network of research centres, universities and technical institutions that aims to mobilise scientific and technical knowledge and expertise to solve sustainable development problems. The Chair is a member of the SDSN and its Spanish division, the Red Española para el Desarrollo Sostenible (REDS)
