PhD Candidate

Sergi Arfelis is currently working on his PhD thesis, supervised by Dr Pere Fullana and Dr Alba Bala, at the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF. His thesis, funded by the Swiss company Deasyl, aims the development and application of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to study and compare several innovative and environmentally friendly chemical technologies developed by Deasyl SA with conventional technologies. His focus is on investigating the industrialisation possibilities of green processes at laboratory scale. He works with modelling and simulation softwares for chemical process and with professional softwares for Life Cycle Assessments. The work involves not only research but also actively participating in environmental projects, engaging in public debates, proposing scientific solutions, presenting findings at conferences, and publishing in esteemed international journals.

Profesional Activity

With a diverse background in chemical engineering, sustainability management, and environmental studies. Based in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, he has been actively involved in various roles spanning research, teaching, consulting, and engineering across different organizations.

Furthermore, he served as a lecturer at UPF Barcelona School of Management, where he taught courses on Chemical Principles and Carbon Footprint as part of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management program. He also held teaching positions at ESCI-UPF, contributing to postgraduate courses on Sustainability Transition and Climate Emergency, with a focus on Organization Carbon Footprint and Environmental Footprint. In addition to his academic pursuits he had 3 years working as a Process Engineer in the Chemical Industry sector.

Additionally, he completed a Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Energy at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, covering various aspects of renewable energies, pollution management, energy economics, and sustainability tools. His academic journey began with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the same institution, providing a comprehensive foundation in chemical processes, laboratory techniques, and industrial maintenance, among other subjects. He also participated in the Santander X Explorer Program, an entrepreneurship initiative aimed at fostering innovative solutions contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Through this program, he gained practical skills in business ideation, project implementation, and sustainable entrepreneurship.
